Frequently asked questions
Many homeowners have questions about helical piles installation. The following are some of the questions we get most often about what they are, what they do, and how we install them.
What are helical or screw piles?
Helical or screw piles are foundation components that are composed of steel shafts with helical plates. These elements are screwed into the ground for use as support structures in a variety of residential construction projects.
What is the installation process for helical piles?
Round shaft helical piles are driven into the ground with a special installation machine that makes fast work of the process. Hydraulic machinery screws each shaft into the ground for precise and efficient installation. No concrete is used, so there is no additional time needed to allow the concrete to fully cure before starting construction on a project.
When are helical piles typically used?
Helical piles are typically used for creating the foundation of a structure in loose or otherwise poor soil conditions. These can be used for a wide range of residential applications as well as commercial and industrial purposes, including decks, porches, and retaining walls. There is minimal excavation required which means less disturbance and disruption of residential areas and they can withstand significant vertical loads and stabilize pre-existing structures.
Is there a desired depth for optimal anchoring of helical piles?
The best depth for helical piles depends on the load size and the soil conditions in which the shafts will be installed. In most cases, helical piles are installed as deep as ten to thirty-five feet but each project poses different requirements and challenges and they can be installed at lower depths in order to reach the proper load-bearing strata.
Can bad weather delay or otherwise impact the installation of my helical piles?
Lousy weather has no impact on helical piles installation because there is no excavation required, the installation process is fast and straightforward with very little preparation or installation time needed, so we can install helical piles in rainy weather and freezing temperatures.
Can you install helical piles in all types of soil?
Helical piles have been designed for load bearing capacity in most soil conditions, including wet and soft soil types. That means they are ideal for use in clay, sand, silt, loamy, and peaty soil. Harder, rocky soils may require some additional equipment and restrict the depth of installation in some cases.
How long does it take to install helical piles?
We can complete most residential helical pile installation projects in a day or two. Larger projects that are more complicated to achieve may require some additional time based on the number of piles needed for the project and the installation depth required.
Will the project require a permit to start work?
Yes, permits are typically required for all types of foundation work and that includes the installation of helical piles for residential use. Our team will be sure to obtain any permits necessary before starting work at your home.
Are there benefits to going with helical piles over concrete for my construction project?
Helical piles offer precise installation, minimal site disturbance and load-bearing capacity that can be utilized almost immediately after being installed. These are distinct advantages over pouring concrete which is not an efficient installation method due to the curing process needed before starting any construction work. Helical piles are also far more reliable and sturdier for use in most soil types.
How long can I expect my helical pile foundation to last?
Our team has the advanced technical expertise to ensure that your helical piles are installed properly and we use only the best, highest-quality hardware that offers full protection against corrosion. The result is a helical pile foundation that can last up to seventy-five years or longer.
